Coconut oil and muslin bags

Posted: July 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

A source of packaging waste, money expenditure and irritation for me is moisturizers. I have gone through so many! So I have decided to try extra virgin coconut oil on my face! Particularly to get rid of the hereditary dark circles. Day 3 of the experiment and I admit I have breakouts. They are not the too little sleep and too much chocolate combined with maybe too much alcohol kind of Breakout. They seem less threatening. For this reason I have decided its because my skin is not used to such an influx of nutrients. Time will tell.

Also I added some yummy smelling essential oil to my evoo body moisturizer. Photo above. Now I don’t smell like salad. Woohoo.

On other packaging news I read on zeroswastehome that organic muslin bags are great for buying fruit and behest and storing in your fridge. It prolongs storage. However I can’t seem to find those bags in Brisbane or online for the life of me. I think I might be forced to buy bulk from what am I going to do with 300 bags though?

Alright what kind of natural facial moisturizers have worked for you? And who would like some Muslin bags?  Anyone?

Coffee cups!

OK I admit it. I love my Takeaway coffee. Capppuccino in Australia and latte in the US as I found it really hard to get a good cup of cappuccino in the states. I get one a day! Apparently Starbucks go through approximately 4 billion coffee cups a year!

Till now I have grappled with those heavy ceramic mugs which lets face it, is simply too cumbersome to cart around. When I was in Perth I finally found a lightweight plastic cup called a Keepcup.

I love it and it fits easily in my handbag. Next step espresso machine 🙂

I realized that I was completely out of body moisturizer and dreaded a supermarket trip to get this one thing which I am sure would come in attrocious packaging.

I thought about it for a little bit and decided to try extra virgin olive oil. Oh my god. Amazing. Absorbed really quickly, no greasy feeling, and my skin looked great! And so easy to apply. I decided to keep a bowl of it in the bathroom as an experiment the next few days.

I also used it as lip balm and looked a high quality lip gloss!

What are your thoughts? Any side effects or research you are aware of?

Oh and I tried to take a photo of the olive oil bottle for this post but instead it slipped through my fingers and smashed into the floor. Aye aye aye what a clean up job.

I have been looking for my passion. The one thing I love, so I can then do it everyday. Truth is I don’t know what that is. However I do know that I have been complaining about packaging and our consumption of it for a while now.

I am going to run a little experiment. I am going to find ways to consume less packaging.

Some ideas as I lie here unable to sleep

1. Keep track of our landfill and recycling for a week
2. Buy compostable bags for rubbish
3. Use cotton thread instead of floss
4. Visit flannery store in taringa or (a bulk and organic store in Brisbane Australia)
5. Research my own cleaning product. Vinegar, baking soda and essential oil apparently.
6. Grow veges and fruit
7. Research worst and best packaging based on environmental impact.

What do you think? Have you been successful in reducing package consumption? Let me know how!
